High School Prep (HSP) Program
Marble Valley Academy is committed to preserving childhood and recognizes that children develop at different rates. Each student's readiness for high school—physically, socially, and academically—varies and may not align with their peers.
While many parents consider hold-back years before Kindergarten, we find significant value in this approach before high school, as it maximizes growth across various life areas. Our program prepares students to advance physically, emotionally, and academically.
Importantly, the research on "holdbacks" often carries a negative stigma, typically associated with academic struggles. At MVA, we reframe this narrative; our older students are seen as leaders who embrace a unique opportunity to enhance their readiness for future challenges.
Physical Readiness:
Many students, particularly those aspiring to excel in athletics during high school, may benefit from an additional year for physical growth, strength, and agility. This extension can significantly enhance their confidence and overall well-being, leading to improved performance across various areas.
For athletes, an extra year is particularly advantageous. The NCAA prohibits participation in sports for athletes turning 20 during their senior year, so this additional time can be beneficial for achieving personal athletic goals, provided the student remains within the eligibility timeframe.
Social-Emotional Readiness:
While some students held back may face challenges in peer relationships, evidence suggests they can gain self-confidence and expand their social networks. The hold-back program at MVA is framed as an opportunity for growth, offering an additional year to enhance social skills and emotional stability. Our unique learning environment emphasizes verbal communication, collaboration, and critical thinking to facilitate this development. Truly thinking the mind to think!
Academic Readiness:
The National Association of School Psychologists indicates that students who are held back often experience immediate academic improvement during their first two years of high school. At MVA, we strategically implement the HSP curriculum to address each child's unique academic needs, whether through advanced online high school courses or reinforcement of essential concepts. This personalized approach ensures that learning is continuous and tailored.
Moreover, an additional year provides invaluable opportunities for collaboration, idea exchange, group projects, and personal maturation. Research supports that these social and emotional skills are crucial for long-term academic success. By fostering a supportive environment focused on holistic development, we empower students to enhance their confidence and readiness for the next level of education, ultimately setting them up for sustained achievement.
